honestly this is everything i've ever wanted from a movie
Was truly not expecting to like this at all - the marketing made it look pedantic, sentimental, exploitative, etc, and the movie is none of those things. It's restrained, subtle, honest, horrifying without trying too hard to be. It reaches huge emotional moments but does so with a light touch. Kidman is fucking incredible, and delivers a scene of catharsis that just utterly wrecked me. Hedges and Crowe both kill it as well, but Kidman feels like the standout. Certainly one of the best and most important films about the LGBT community ever made.
