2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey ★★★★★

Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is a mind-blowing film that influenced pop culture forever and is truly deserving of its high praise. On a technical level it might be cinema’s magnum opus — outdoing epic movies and likewise becoming the visual pioneer for what epic movies can look like. The beautifully polished and spotless cinematography makes this a must watch in IMAX. Although cyberpunk is the contemporary vision for our future, the hard sci-fi and cassette futurism displayed in the film does not feel outdated in the slightest.

I appreciate Kubrick’s decision to not fully adapt the lore from Arthur C. Clarke’s novel of the same title. Instead of building a fictional world with a plot-driven story, Kubrick’s 2001 emphasizes more on the bigger picture and focuses on humanity’s next evolutionary leap. By creating a photorealistic atmosphere and visualizing this nearly tangible universe, Kubrick’s design feels like a documentary made from the near future. Whether this portrayal of our future is optimistic or apocalyptic, it’s entirely on the hands of the audience to interpret.
