I can’t tell if this is narcissistic or self-aware, and debating a consensus on this film is quite frustrating. At the very least, The House that Jack Built is an interesting one. This has some of the strongest Lars von Trier moments and definitely some of the weakest. The third act especially has got to be one of the most visually expressive works that I’ve seen of his. Yet, that effective imagery is unfortunately weakened by how often von Trier feels the need to be so literal and exposit his subtlety.
With that being said, I’m looking forward to watching it again.
