I am big. It’s the pictures that got small
Might be one of my favourite film endings of all time......
I’m having a difficulty rating this because the first 45 minutes are somewhat uninteresting, the film drags with no clear narrative direction. But everything after that left me in awe, I wouldn’t be over exaggerating to call it a masterpiece. The brilliant score, gorgeous cinematography centred around the colour red and obviously standout performances from Irene Jacob and Jean Louis Trintignant. Superb example of French arthouse with subtle backdrop of fate and destiny. Can see myself rewatching this very soon and increasing the rating.
Poetry in motion. Antonioni really did make some absolutely stunning and thought provoking films. I’ve been neglecting that man’s filmography since watching La Notte last year, will be correcting that mistake in the near future.
Monica Vitti is done out here if film Twitter ever get a whiff of *THAT* scene, extreme even for 1962 standards.
Fair enough De Palma lol. I get why this is polarising, but for me this is just another one of his stylised suspense thrillers that of course is largely influenced by Hitchcock’s best work, man just can’t help himself. You’ve got the iconic split screen, slow motion sequences, swooping camera movements and an orchestral score— De Palma signature in a genre he understands.
The plot is largely inconceivable and that’s probably the reason for this 3.3 average rating, however De Palma…
A mixed bag, not sure what the critics are smoking. The first half was so good and then it becomes this cliched predictable pile of mediocrity. Also didn’t like what they done with John Cena’s character in that last act, I knew it was coming and I hated it. Harley Quinn bottom tier character, painfully unfunny.
Impressive to have so many talented actors and not a single remotely interesting character throughout. Another Netflix arsepack, the soundtrack is genuinely abysmal and doesn’t belong in a western. Tarantino is the only current director that gets this genre, in many ways this film tries to replicate his style but it simply doesn’t work. That plot twist would hit if the characters weren’t so poorly written. Taking another half star off for that final shot. Awful
