doesn't really go past the surface of the "good girl in a small town wants more, gets into trouble" story, but dianna agron gives it all she's got. and paz de la huerta - i am a huge paz fan, and i'm not sure she even knew cameras were rolling on this film; it just seems like this is what it would be like to hang out with her, with all the spacy rants and cool-girl vibes.

for the first half, this is truly GOAT-worthy material - art is scary and dangerous, beauty is oppressive and violent, and stan and josee's relationship is among the most erotic things i've ever seen on film (the scene where stan makes josee call maguey - wowwwwww). it loses the thread in the second half, where love rears its head and the film becomes more of a traditional love triangle. but that audacious montage near the end is worth every misstep - some of the most beautiful and nightmarish experiments i've ever seen in a film.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

this is a terrible movie. it is deeply condescending and moralizing yet shallow and misogynistic, all at once. it glorifies stylized violence, and then refuses to own up to its own violence (seriously, you're gonna have a cannibal scene and not show any violence, but DO have a very long, male gaze shower scene with two models?). it screams about the exploitation of women, yet constantly mocks the character with plastic surgery and features the violent rape of 13-year-old runawayโ€ฆ

this movie has an absolutely perfect mix of taking itself 100% seriously, while also throwing all the weirdest crap they could think of at the audience. if it was a little off in either respect, it would be unwatchable, but hooper gets it perfectly right.
