    First Reformed

    ★★★★½

First Reformed probably isn’t perfect or timeless or going to be tattooed forever to my brain. But it is an exceptional piece of direction: a must see for all interested in the craft of movies, if not all who are interested in movies generally.

Solid containment thriller. Starts to feel like it’s running on fumes toward the end of the second act as the specifics of the location don’t provide enough diversity and novelty. Performs a hard feat of building strong characters through a kinetic onslaught, but too many of the inevitable deaths feel a little cheap. Great style and intimacy with the world.
