Daniel Johnson’s review published on Letterboxd:
“Don’t be serious, it’s just a rehearsal.”
Good on Wong Kar-Wai for making the most cinematic romances into the saddest and loneliest experiences. I love his style and I love his films, but I legitimately don’t like watching his films because they make me so damn sad. Speaking of his films, this is wonderful. The story is really great and manages to create some genuinely beautiful moments at the same time that it is ripping your heart out. The end of the story feels inevitable, but it still hits with a heavy punch. That’s due to Wong Kar-Wai but Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung deserve an incredible amount of credit as well. They’re just wonderful in this, and it benefits the film a lot by having two actors that are both very good at acting and also very attractive. It’s just a good film. I don’t know if there’s anything more to say than that.
