I think about this film all the time. Finally rewatched it and it's still just as heartbreaking months later. The story, and the way Kore-eda presents it, is simple and yet there are so many details that represent themes that are not necessarily foregrounded - whether it be the passage of time or Akira's silent longing for his childhood.
The tenderness of Kore-eda's filmmaking and its contrast with the tragic nature of this story is so beautiful! I could write an essay on this.
