Daniel’s review published on Letterboxd:
Another film that cements Jack Nicholson as one of the greats. In fact, the whole cast is spectacular. Louise Fletcher does a great job as the antagonist, making me equally fear and respect her throughout. Oh, and I didn't even realize I was looking at Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd before I was over an hour into the movie.
It's an interesting subject matter to tackle in film. What exactly is mental illness? I don't think Cuckoo's Nest aims to answer that question, but it certainly wants you to ponder it. Again, that's the beauty of the cast of this film, they play such a varied group of characters it makes you as a viewer unable to categorize mental illness. After all, they're all just people.
There are layers upon layers of subtext here, but in the end, I wish I got a little more carried away with the film emotionally, though I certainly liked it.
