My first Miyazaki/Ghibli, and a wonderful introduction.
It’s fine. Phoenix is good, but the script is weak. The images are nice, but they feel like they were planned around the eventual trailer. It’s a visual mish-mash of eras (it’s the 1970s but also with VCRs and answering machines), but it’s fantastic at creating an ugly, grimy world. The finance bros are perfect douchebags, but it’s insane to think they all like to sing Sondheim together. Etc.
The most interesting stuff was Phoenix’s slide into nihilism. The least interesting stuff was the connections to Bruce Wayne and Gotham-universe lore.
