The Assault ★★½

The least interesting of the three Leclercq’s I’ve seen so far; clearly trying to be a Greengrass-style docudrama, complete with obnoxious shaky cam. Leclercq also drains all the color out of the film, creating a muddy grey smear with occasional bits of blue or muted flesh tones still visible. It’s a weird choice that adds nothing to the proceedings. Finally comes alive in the last act as the actual assault starts, suggesting that it’s the only part of the movie he was really interested in. Never boring, exactly, but a mixed bag for sure.
