“We can’t stop the dancing chickens”
Herzog’s deconstruction of The American Dream follows an incredibly simple arc of the attempt and failure to start a new life for a German immigrants Foreshadowed from the very first sip of alcohol we see Bruno take, the trio’s march towards disappointment hardly comes as a surprise, yet what elevates this movie higher is the perspective Herzog has on his characters and their environments.
Typical to Herzog, there is a disconnect between man and his surroundings, characterized by a language barrier and an unrealistic expectation on what America is, at its core, in contrast to a much less hopefully reality.
The finale ends our protagonist’s journey about where it began, a chicken playing a piano in small box.
