Slugs ★★★½

The acting might be borderline awful, the story is ridiculous and uneven, and the scares lacking, but Slugs knows that it suffers from all of these things and plays it up with a wink-wink attitude that works remarkably well for it. It never pulls away from the silliness and often embraces it, running at full speed with its over the top moments (there are a lot more explosions that I would have ever expected in a film like this) and relying on its can-do intent and strong special effects to win out. More often than not, they do.
