Singin' in the Rain

Singin' in the Rain ★★★★★

You're not fooling me, Gene Kelly. The lady at Universal Studios Orlando already told me that's milk you're singin' in!

What a fun and flashy loveletter to the magic of the movies. The song "You Were Meant For Me" takes place on a soundstage, in front of a matte painting. They make a point of showing the fan that ripples the wardrobe and the lighting rig that sets the mood. The movie is like "Of course it's all fake" and that somehow makes it more romantic than a love song filmed on location with real wind and scenery.

Gene Kelly's and Donald O'Connor's legs seem to move independently from their bodies. We had to hit rewind after "Fit as a Fiddle", "Make 'Em Laugh", and "Moses Supposes" and watch them again because the impressive physicality almost happens too fast to take in all at once. And they are actually doing it! I've now watched them on youtube multiple times since.

Kicking myself for not checking this out sooner. It will be one I return to often. Wow wow wow.

Seriously though about the milk. What did the set smell like after a few days of that.
