Movies made by auteur directors with a very arthouse sensibility, that happen to be genre movies (e.g. horror films, heist films, martial arts films etc).
This is not an attempt to sneer at genre movies (which is an attitude I hate and would never be my intention), but just to highlight a particular, distinct subset of film.
Films do not have to be good to make this list. I myself do not like some of the films here.

I'm just going to clarify a little what sort of films belong on this list, as I originally envisioned it. Here are some great arthouse / high art films that aren't genre films: Moonlight, The Tree of Life, In the Mood for Love, Persona, Andrei Rublev. Here are some great genre films that aren't arthouse / high art films: Alien, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Die Hard, Hot Fuzz, The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Some of these may be borderline, but I hope the gist can be understood.
List capped at 500 films for now. One in, one out policy.
