    Letterboxd Season Challenge: 2019-20

    Week 10: November 10th-16th
    Cinéma-vérité Week

    Directed by Béla Tarr.

We open with a brief narration of the preceding events - a rumored horse whipping which supposedly brought on Friedrich Nietzsche’s psychosis. We then delve into the opening shot of the man who whipped the horse and the horse itself plowing through the elements to a booming, downtrodden soundtrack - both picture and sound reminiscent of The Phantom Carriage. All of this had me incredibly excited…

This film is an ornate scone hand-crafted by the finest baker and served, wrapped in box and tied with bow, at the establishment held in highest regard on the corner of Maple & Dorsey.

There’s also a pig fucking a Welsh rabbit in the back room, but you won’t find out about that until later.

For now, just enjoy your scone.

    Coronavirus Chronicles

Yorgos Lanthimos is, without a doubt, one of the most polarizing figures in cinema. Some consider his work to be masterpieces - others, nonsensical dribble. While I have quibbles with some of his foreign language output - it took me a while to fully embrace Dogtooth, and I didn’t particularly enjoy Alps - he has become one of my favorite directors who, in my opinion, gets better and better with every movie he makes.

    The thing with Yorgos is…

    Coronavirus Chronicles

I’ve been watching some damn good movies lately! Feels good. Even if this isn’t such a feel-good movie. More like a “hey, what the fuck” movie. I liked it a lot.

The style here is outlandish and absurd. Sure of itself and terrifyingly hilarious. Like a nightmare in a foreign circus, but everything is funny until it’s not. It does wear you out a bit - the many, many characters and vegetarian subplot takes some keeping up on the part of the viewer. But everything comes together for a very satisfying conclusion.

I can’t wait to watch Amelie!

    Letterboxd Season Challenge: 2019-20

    Week 30: April 12th-18th
    Director Recommendations: Martin Scorsese Week

    Directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

This is a captivating movie, and a VERY different tone from any of Coppola’s 70’s output. While both Godfather’s have a similarly reserved feel to them, they are much grander in scale, whereas The Conversation feels colder and more private. Apocalypse Now, of course, rains its madness down from the sky in explosive showers, while this film shutters the madness away…

Holy moly. When I checked out the Letterboxd reviews I thought I’d be walking into a dumpster fire, beautiful trailer be damned. And NOW all I can say is y’all must be crazy. What a wonderful FEELING this movie is, full of heart and childlike wonder.

Now yes, it is narratively messy - especially in the second half - and the third act is overly hammy, this I won’t deny. But you can’t view this movie as a…
