Dave Evans’s review published on Letterboxd:
I have a thing for period dramas which engage with the topic of religion, especially Catholicism. The influence of religion in society is a very compelling theme. I think Evelyn gets the balance right. It doesn't criticize the whole Catholic church or blame them for everything wrong in Ireland. Rather, it casts a critical eye over the specific situation. It also does a good job of engaging with the legal inconsistencies in Ireland at the time. I learned a lot.
I found Evelyn an easy film to get caught up in. It's shamelessly sentimental, but the fact that it's based on a true story and has some great performances in it means that I never felt like I was watching a Lifetime drama. It's definitely worth seeing.
