    And when you put that madness in the midst of South Korea’s corrupt judicial system and its staggering inequality, tragedy will result.

    Kim Hye-ja is brilliant and unstoppable. The opening and closing shots of this film are unbelievably haunting. 

    [Only downside of this movie: the Blu-ray video transfer is kind of terrible. Compression artifacts and moire patterns galore. Hoping the Bong-aissance gives us a new disc down the line that’s worthy of the film]

    Last night, I watched a group of beautiful Asian people get on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and accept the most prestigious award that the American entertainment industry can bestow on a piece of art.

    It was an uplifting affirmation that the best stories, the best art, the best work can come from anywhere. And be recognized for it.

    On the other hand, a neighbor from my local community responded to a Facebook post I made yesterday telling me to go “Go back to China.”
