    Downhill

    ★★★

At the Golden Globes this year, director Bong Joon-Ho already gave the only review of this film that is necessary:

"Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”

Motherhood is a type of madness.

And when you put that madness in the midst of South Korea’s corrupt judicial system and its staggering inequality, tragedy will result.

Last night, I watched a group of beautiful Asian people get on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and accept the most prestigious award that the American entertainment industry can bestow on a piece of art.

It was an uplifting affirmation that the best stories, the best art, the best work can come from anywhere. And be recognized for it.

On the one hand, this is a fun romp with just a tiny, extremely heavy dash of anti-Asian racism thrown in for shits and giggles.

On the other hand, a neighbor from my local community responded to a Facebook post I made yesterday telling me to go “Go back to China.”

    So, fuck this movie.
