  • Mori, The Artist's Habitat

    Mori, The Artist's Habitat 2018

    Justin Nordell

★★★½ Watched by Justin Nordell 26 Feb, 2021

Mori the Artist’s Habitat is a quiet, beautiful day of a film. And Kirin Kiki can do no wrong.

  • Tom & Jerry

    Tom & Jerry 2021

    Justin Peterson

    ★★★ Watched by Justin Peterson 26 Feb, 2021 5

So why was the focus of this new Tom & Jerry movie on Chloë Grace Moretz trying to fake her way into a lavish hotel career, and coordinate an over-the-top wedding?

"If Tom and Jerry can be out there working together, then so can we."

While this Tom & Jerry movie does feature plenty of hijinks from the world of animation's great cat and mouse duo, there are just so many random choices in this oversized cluster of a family movie.

  • Ghost in the Shell

    Ghost in the Shell 1995

    Peter Foy

    ★★★★½ Rewatched by Peter Foy 26 Feb, 2021 1

The anime cyberpunk classic has aged like a fine wine, and feels just as as potent and contemplative now as it did twenty-five years ago. Identity's place in a technologically advanced society is certainly a commonplace theme for science fiction, but what makes Ghost in the Shell feel so paramount is its material regarding post-gender. Major Motoko has remained one of the most fascinating anime protagonists, both for her philosophical musings and leadership qualities, which assists the film's rich subtext,…

  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004

    David Wallace

★★★★½ Watched by David Wallace 12 Jul, 2018

In his review of Michel Gondry’s "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," film critic Roger Ebert began with the words: ‘It’s one thing to wash that man right outta your hair, and another to erase him from your mind.’ This is a movie about endless meet-cutes, break-ups and make-ups, with the general message seeming to indicate that it’s better to retain all our memories, good and bad. After the deterioration of a relationship, some people might wash out that hair…

  • 3:10 to Yuma

    3:10 to Yuma 1957

    Creasy007

    ★★★★½ Watched by Creasy007 26 Feb, 2021

"The town drunk gave his life because he believed that people should be able to live in decency and peace together. Do you think I can do less?"

Tighter, sleeker and more nefarious than the 2007 remake, and one whopper of a classic western, Delmer Daves' '3:10 to Yuma' is a rollicking, slow burn adventure that moves discreetly while keeping tension, danger and a gunman with a rifle around every corner. Glenn Ford deliciously yet honorably chews up the scenery…

  • The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies 2014

    Slig001

    ★★½ Watched by Slig001 26 Feb, 2021 1

The conclusion to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings addendum is the weakest of the trilogy. The story picks up right where the last film left off, and quickly dispatches main villain Smaug, which is a shame. The rest of the film is a face off between various warring factions and it feels like a drawn out bloated mess. The Hobbit films lack any real sense of grandeur - Lord of the Rings felt very "real", while this film feels…

    ★★★★ Rewatched by danny94 26 Feb, 2021

Once again i watch this, not perfect but simpel entertainment.

Today me and my father was going to watch a movie, he wanted to watch some action, so i bravely choose Mad Max Fury Road, halfway through it was to much for him, so i recommended this insteed.

Always a safe bet for some relaxing and fun action.

Sweetly nostalgic, without ever seeming forced... Just a great love story.

    Killer soundtrack, too.

The first Ozu film into my collection of essays was suggested by a patron. It will be migrated and published on Letterboxd from Tuesday, March 2, 2021. Give it a viewing before then in preparation for the 4,000 words here.

"When you are about to kill a man, what do you look at? I've asked this question of other men, and do you know what they always say? They look at his hands. I don't. I look at his eyes"

"because the moment before he moves his hand, his eyes betray him. And you can always read death in them: yours or his."

Ennio combined with another Sergio and Lee van Cleef.....Could it get any better?

The only fucking issue with this is that you cannot be cutting each shot and each frame within every other 2 seconds. And that too multiple times in a single sequence. That just makes a heavy melodramatic sequence that is supposed to hit you emotionally, a 'funny' one. That sort of editing only takes place in comedies. I've got some REAL editing issues here with this and it doesn't help or affect my opinions knowing it was directed by Kar-Wai.…
