Yes, it's corny - especially Franchot Tone - but this is one of those "fun corny" noirs. The cinematography is pretty noir-great, especially in the crazy "jazz jam" scene in which Ella Raines seduces Elisah Cook. The San Francisco settings stand out. But most importantly, the "detective" figure in this noir is a woman!! And then there's that hat and the fabulous Aurora Miranda (Carmen's sister) who you may also recognize from Three Caballeros.
