    Monos

    ★★★★

Monos keeps its characters at a remove (while still giving the audience glimpses into their interior lives - The mushroom trip! Julianne’s call home!). It’s fine by me, because we still get thrilling group dynamics, insane visuals, and another perfect Mica Levi score...  there's this one scene transition that uses a shot of a dirty tarp to killer effect, it’s gotta be my favorite movie trick of the year.

Other people have noted the “Apocalypse Now” and “Lord of the…

  • Ad Astra

    Ad Astra

    ★★★★½

Do you remember how Gravity was like ... 95% thrill ride, 5% Sandra Bullock monologuing about her dead daughter? Ad Astra evens the ratio to 50-50, plus the human stuff is actually weird and specific and fresh - philosophically rich, psychologically astute, and also Natasha Lyonne is there!

It’s amazing  that Gray’s Lost City of Z - which you’d think was as wild and expansive and singular as movies come these days - was something like a practice run at…

    Where'd You Go, Bernadette

    ★★★★½

Excited to stan for this forever!!  Comedy perched on the edge of despair. Like if BLUE JASMINE went somewhere human and loving... and also to Antarctica.

So many swerves in Cate’s performance... I howled at a certain line reading in the intervention scene.

Bless Megan Ellison for giving this material to Richard - more directors should be encouraged to take on material that ISN’T an obvious fit for their sensibility.

  • Stagecoach

    Stagecoach

A good reminder that they’ve been “subverting” the western for most of the genre’s history. Delicious archetypes at play here - the drunk, the whore, the gentleman gambler - elevated by even better performances. I’ll remember Ringo diving into that low-angle gunfight shot 4ever!!!

  • Donkey Skin

    Donkey Skin

    ★★★★

Just, like, the COMEDY of Catherine Deneuve trudging around in that goofy-ass donkey skin.

This and the Brandy Cinderella... same energy tbh, both classics

  • Kiki's Delivery Service

    Kiki's Delivery Service

    ★★★½

A movie about sadness ... but also the particular joy kids get from being helpful. Gentle!

  • The Young Girls of Rochefort

    The Young Girls of Rochefort

    ★★★★★

Take everyday life... and make it a French musical. A sundrenched comic refraction of Umbrellas of Cherbourg. More directors should remake their own dramas as comedies!!

Especially loved the jaunty musical number about a murderer on the loose. Sweeney Todd WISHES he had this color palette to work with.

Finally but no less importantly: the eyeshadow in this movie is a MONUMENT to makeup

  • Princess Cyd

    Princess Cyd

    ★★★★½

There should be more movies about the aunt-niece experience! This is a great one!

  • Midsommar

    Midsommar

Loved how Midsommar takes the horror trope of punishing characters for their sex and drug infractions... and extends the same consequences to anthro department ethics board violations.  Lol and the fight between Chidi and the boyfriend over thesis topics... That’s highbrow academic satire, luvs!!

  • Drop Dead Gorgeous

    Drop Dead Gorgeous

Compared to something like Waiting for Guffman, the performances here are much more... variable. Still plenty of nasty fun, though.
