Thor: Ragnarok ★★★★½

I'd love to work out just how many Oscar winning actors and actresses have ventured out into the MCU for a bit of comic-book mayhem. Thor's main two, Cate Blanchett and Anthony Hopkins seem to take to their respective roles with a glee that makes you forget that they're both more used to theatre, the stage, or award-baiting melodramas. The fact that the writing, and I would imagine the pay too, is so impressive that they can attract stars like Hopkins and Blanchett bodes well for the future regardless of the fallout after Endgame.

Thor : Ragnarok was instrumental in bringing certain franchises together for the first time on screen. Thanos had been mentioned in The Avengers, Captain America, and Doctor Strange, but it was in this film that the threat posed, not just to Earth, but the galaxy as a whole, made the path towards Infinity War and Endgame so smooth. I'm sure Captain Marvel played a part too, but given that I still haven't seen it, I couldn't comment. Thor, alongside Tony Stark's Iron Man has arguably been the most comedic of all The Avengers, although I still think that Guardians of the Galaxy offered more laughs than all the other films in the MCU.

This third outing for The God of Thunder is a mixed bag in terms of luck for the big guy. He loses his father, his hammer, and has to face up to the fact that his home planet of Asgard will perish, and that only he, with a little help, can save the people. It's a funny film, written to everyone's strengths, from Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster to Blanchett's Hela, to a scene-stealing turn from the director himself, Taika Waititi, as Korg, this has much to love following the slightly disappointing Dark World. For a film soaked in Norse legend, it was fitting that the power chords of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song featured so heavily in a film that sits high in my MCU ranking. If this marks the end of Hemsworth's portrayal of Thor in a stand-alone movie, then he went out with a bang because this is entertainment at its best.
