Hereditary ★★★★½

This film had me in cold, anxious sweats through nearly everything past the first 30 mins. I left the theatre after it finished, but couldn't stop thinking about what I had just seen. The allegorical nature of the plot (up until the end), the eerie and dissonant score, Toni Collette's extremely convincing performance as a grief-stricken mother spiraling into madness, the many unforgivingly violent and gory on-screen deaths; these are all aspects of Hereditary that stuck with me long after the movie had ended. I would even go so far as to say this movie disturbed me so much it almost ruined my day, and that is what truly great horror movies are supposed to do. This Ari Aster guy just earned a huge blip on my radar for this, and I cannot wait to see what he's got up his sleeve for his next feature-length.
