It is not until the 1980's that Puerto Rican women start directing films. During this decade, Poli Marichal starts experimenting with video and animated shorts. In 1982, Ana María García directs the first documentary, La operación, on the forced sterilization of Puerto Rican women on the island. Out of all of the women, Sonia Fritz has been the most consistent filmmaker over the years and is considered by some one of Puerto Rico's best and prolific documentarist.
A very common trend, not just then, but now as well, is that our women directors tend to make mostly documentaries or shorts. Also, most of them come from other disciplines and have found in films an extension of what they were doing in their own fields (photography, journalism, printmaking, academics, etc).
