Full disclosure: I have never read this book nor have I seen the 1984 film.
Buuuuut … man, I don’t get the hate this is getting. I thought it was a very entertaining film with excellent performances by the amazing Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Zac Efron.
The only two critiques I have is that the film was very dark - not thematically, but physically. I feel like the McGees live in a world that is perpetually poorly lit.
Remember when Troma made beautifully trashy, subversive, artful pieces of satire that managed to be both fun and entertaining while also flipping the middle finger at the Hollywood mainstream? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
And what do they make now? Mostly cynical edgelord soulless dreck. And this fact is underscored whenever I come across some previously unseen Troma gem from years past and I revel in the beauty of what Troma used to be.
(And levy that same indictment at Full Moon … somewhere in the life of a counterculture vanguard film company they trade ingenuity for the ability to bilk their fans for a quick buck.)
