I can't believe this is a directorial debut. Between this, Edge of Seventeen, and Lady Bird, three of my favorite films of the past year or so have been coming-of-age directorial debuts written and directed by women– and it's certainly unfair to put Raw in the same league as those, because this movie does "coming-of-age" oh so differently, to greater effect. Julia Ducournau is brilliant, and Garance Marillier is incredible to watch as she physically embodies Justine's coming-of-age, completely in her acting. This movie is terrific.
