West Side Story

West Side Story

was on the fence about this until the end where i came down on the side of mostly thinking it’s… okay. bummed about that as this has been my most anticipated film of the last two years but it’s not without a lot of good! might not feel that way if it weren’t intrinsically up against he greatest movie musical ever made but what are you gonna do. and elgort… hoo boy. feels like he was cast ‘cause he’s a name actor who could physically commit to the one (1) sequence he has to dance in, but to what end. found him so charmless and without chemistry, and there’s truly no worse movie for him to be hocking with his allegations. his relationship w/ maria feels icky by design AND by the metatextual knowledge of his life

that said, it’s still spielberg, and the man working entirely in his bag. blocking is out of control good, kaminski’s camerawork is lively and strong, and i will definitely enjoy watching the mambo & “america” sequences in a big excited imax crowd one day. big ups to mike faist as riff, who is destined to play john mulaney in a teenage flashback some day, and big ups to the casting director, who found all of the jets in one audition waiting room for a role that went to tom holland
