    Jojo Rabbit

    ★★½

Scarlett Johansson absolutely nails the role of a German woman who is actually from both Long Island & Nigeria. Nick Frost and the Benjamin Button VFX team absolutely nail the role of Jojo’s best friend Yorki. Sam Rockwell, for the umpteenth time, absolutely nails the role of “virulent racist who is actually good.” Taika Waititi absolutely nails the role of guy who reminds you how much you like Life is Beautiful and Wes Anderson.

    ★★½

The back-to-back combo of this with The NeverEnding Story made me realize that fantasy/adventure films aren’t gone, they’ve just been scooped up by children’s animation. Which is something of a bummer- but not completely awful! At least the genre still exists. This was perfectly fine. I experienced a very shameful frisson during a strange Coldplay needle-drop and my dad kept humming along to melodies they made for the film as if he’d heard them before.

  • Water Lilies

    Water Lilies

    ★★½

We decided to track down and watch this movie after Maddie loved Céline Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire but this one didn't click as much for me. I was tipsy, and found myself saddened in the first half by how much I related to Marie despite feeling like I "couldn't" relate to Marie, but the second half felt like a cruel (and– though, yes, i've never been a woman and can't truly say for sure that this is…

  • Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too

Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too

    ★★½

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Okay, again, I have to read this generously. This is supposed to be a Disney-fied version of Black Mirror, on purpose right? Because save for the swearing and the existential crises within, this is indistinguishable from even the best DCOMs.( Which is only a criticism insofar as, I wanted a Black Mirror episode. DCOMs rule.)

Of course, Miley is playing a heightened version of herself, and all the 'mouse' motifs are representative of Disney itself... but even within that generous…

  • Rocketman

    Rocketman

    ★★½

Richard Madden is so hot and Elton John should not get to be a producer on his own biopic

  • Hale County This Morning, This Evening

Hale County This Morning, This Evening

    ★★½

Too experimental and unfocused for me. Would have preferred an actual narrative or some sort of story, rather than a slice of life portrait that feels like a montage of footage shot in the same area.

  • The Wife

    The Wife

    ★★½

Max Irons looks like Peter Kavinsky and Ryan Atwood had a kid

  • Aquaman

    Aquaman

    ★★½

a series of notes i took during the 2018 film Aquaman:

    • james wan is such a good action/vfx director
    • the only two good fight scenes go to nicole kidman and amber heard, but just like all the other fight scenes, they are shot like the 4D harry potter ride at universal studios for some reason
    • this script is... very bad
    • the world of atlantis is fucking gorgeous
    • jason momoa plays aquaman like a cartoon character…

  • Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

    ★★½

    Well, dang.

  • Crazy Rich Asians

    Crazy Rich Asians

    ★★½

i legitimately love how many things in this movie were so unapologetically Asian (and for Asian people) that they did not care to take time and explain them for general (read: white, american) audiences.

the acting is rote, the comedy doesn’t land for me, the characters’ actions and conflicts are all handled so strangely, and i do not think jon m. chu is a very good director– but if only for the wedding scene, i hope the production designer for this movie gets the courtesy Oscar nom that is usually reserved for some boring ass period piece where all the dresses have seventy angles

  • Juliet, Naked

    Juliet, Naked

    ★★½

Hidden in the skeleton of this movie is a fascinating film about how poisonous fandom & hero worship can be and how unhealthy it is to demand that others have same feelings towards pop culture that you do. Masking those bones is a... fine... romantic comedy that proves underutilizes Rose Byrne’s true comedic potential and Chris O’Dowd’s true dramatic potential!!

But hot damn, what a good soundtrack. If you’re gonna make a movie about a musician, you gotta at least nail…

  • BlacKkKlansman

    BlacKkKlansman

    ★★½

This is maybe one of the most frustrating moviegoing experiences I've ever had.

It's not without its good moments. The scenes with the black student union are so powerful. I hope this film is successful enough that it ignites a fire inside the people that need it. But...

    Okay.

The first act of this film sets up SO many threads with so many little sentences that feel like they're going to pay off in smart, progressive, eye-opening ways, and every…
