  • Little Women

    Little Women

It feels unfair for me to rate this movie because i was 10 min late and then left to go to the bathroom an hour in and stayed in the lobby for a bit because I wasn’t really feeling it (dramatic period pieces are an uphill battle for me) but I do think it’s a good film! Just one I probably need to watch again later. Florence Pugh kinda stoke the show for me, and Chalamet has one scene in…

  • Point Break

    Point Break

I showed up to my friend’s party a little late and missed crucial parts of the first act so I won’t rate this, but this movie was way more insane than I had previously thought? But I... loved it. And want more of this psychosexual cop-and-robber-love-each-other dynamic.

  • The Day Shall Come

    The Day Shall Come

    NZIFF FILM #10

I haven't stopped thinking about this movie since 10:23pm NZT last night when the credits roll, and we all sat in the theatre in stark silence for a good minute or so before moving. I can't concisely explain my feelings on this movie, and I can't write anything lengthy about this movie without spoiling it, but I can say that it made me absolutely fucking angry. And yes, I'm angry in the way Morris wants me to…

  • Long Shot

    Long Shot

not rating this one because i saw it last june when it was called FLARSKY and it might be different now, but when i saw it, i kind of hated it? but i think that’s just because it follows the exact formula of a seth rogen movie, down to a level that made me mad because i had already mentally started imagining there would be two certain types of scenes. and then they happened. i don’t know. i don’t wanna shit…

  • The Love Witch

    The Love Witch

We got bored and a bit disillusioned/confused with what parts of the movie were meant to be satirical and which were meant in earnest, so we gave up with 40 minutes left. The commitment to the 60s technicolor style is admirable and wonderful in how it looks, but really frustrating in how poor the acting is as a result. Not for me!

  • Spirited Away

    Spirited Away

can't give it a full rating bc i was sleepy and nodded off for minutes at a time in the middle but this movie is so fucking cute and beautiful and i love the wondrous and creative world it takes place in. i'm gonna watch it again, but this time outside of a theater where i won't get overwhelmed and start dozing off (and maybe without dubbing this time, who can say)

  • To All the Boys I've Loved Before

To All the Boys I've Loved Before

i don't think i would've ever watched this movie, except a friend specifically asked me to. i can't figure out why. she even said "i don't think you'll really like it i'm just curious." i got ~40 minutes and realized this movie is So Not For Me on every level. finishing it and making a letterboxd entry to say it was bad seemed pointless and snobby. that said–

i cannot get over how WEIRD this movie looks. every single shot…

  • The Meg

    The Meg

I love a dumb movie. But everything about this movie felt so... uncharmingly dumb? So plastic and poorly made, like a high-budget TV movie made 14 years too late.

Everyone was having a terrific time through the trailers, and then the room fell embarrassingly silent through the beginning in a way that really hit home how little I wanted to be there. So I left about 15-20 minutes in. Oh well. Not for me!

  • Solo: A Star Wars Story

    Solo: A Star Wars Story

I’m not gonna give it a star rating or say how I felt about it because I don’t wanna give anyone expectations, positive or negative, for going into it. Here are the only things I’ll say for now:

    • The scale and visual style of the action in this movie is outstanding. They are doing a great job with battle/war scenes in the anthology. Ron Howard should’ve directed Rogue One.
I was shocked at how the score actually stood…

  • Game Over, Man!

    Game Over, Man!

This popped up on Netflix at the perfect time for me to chuckle, go "you know what, why not check it out. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised."

I pushed myself to just keep going three times through the first scene and made it to 6:09.

  • Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

The first five minutes of this film are dazzling. Beautiful, awe-inspiring, absolutely wondrous, inspirational science fiction. I might find myself watching that sequence over and over.

And the following 34 minutes were all I watched before I decided to turn this off. Too many movies this year to take in 137 (??) minutes of this!

EDIT: In the time since writing this, I've even had the epiphany that... I don't need to see any more movies this year. I'm gonna relax instead.

I've sat through movies that are way worse than this, in theatres, but this is the first time in my life I've ever just got up and walked out of a film. Extremely not-for-me.
