spanish colonization
i was in awe, and at the same time, disturbed. i love the eerie atmosphere this gave off, as it suddenly got me transported back to middle school when we were taught about the spanish colonization of the philippines during the 16th century. this is what i was reminded of—a metaphor of foreign colonization, preying on the ‘weaker’ countries, stripping off of their treasure and culture for their own gain. the blood river represents the revolution, the colonized country standing up to claim what was originally theirs.
