Dereck’s review published on Letterboxd:
I remember hearing about this movie being announced and blowing it off as just a cheap money grab by Sony to cash in on the current superhero craze. The first trailer looked interesting as the general audience was introduced to the unique animation style. Yet now, after checking this out in the theater, it has given me hope once again in the superhero genre. Nearly everything sticks, except for Kingpin who is somewhat generic, but had a decent character arc that allows children (the targeted audience) to sympathize with him. The best part may be Spider-Man Noir with the Rubick’s Cube and Spider-Ham in general, which made the movie into something I truly will cherish. Please check this out if you can, as it’s not only the best animated film of the year, but one of the best, period.
