Nearly a year ago I read the leaked original script for what was already my most anticipated movie. There weren’t many changes so I knew what I was about to watch, and Chazelle constantly brought the page to life better than I imagined. When Margot Robbie was dancing at the party like I legitimately had chills. And then the first day on set the hectic editing was so fucking amazing. The film kinda peaked there in the first half, but…

Well that surpassed the hype, best movie of the year. There were multiple times I literally teared up from joy. Its so fucking cinematic. The crazy action and insane effects, amazing production design and costumes, awesome cinematography, badass score. But on top of all of that, the story is so incredible. Looking at the poster and knowing about the big dance I was under the impression this was some sort of buddy comedy which didn’t interest me much, but this is a complex and emotional story told brilliantly. It’s a lot like The Departed, but better.

Very funny and creative. The action and editing is easily the highlight for me. I didn’t connect to the emotional parts as much as a lot of people do, but that’s pretty much the only reason I wouldn’t give it 5 stars. I do appreciate the themes and everything was really well crafted. With the performances Quan was without a doubt the best. It’s amazing that Short Round came back as an adult and delivered this wonderful work.

I got chills so many times while watching this. It’s such a masterfully made superhero movie. The action is some of the best ever, the score is phenomenal, the cinematography is excellent. I’d say this is actually the best looking superhero movie of all time. Zoe Kravitz and Robert Pattinson are probably the best portrayals of each of their characters. Paul Dano’s Riddler is instantly an iconic villain performance as well. Detective stories like this aren’t really my favorite, and that’s pretty much what prevents this from being 5 stars. It could’ve been a bit shorter too, though it was generally well paced.
