Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure ★★★½

“You killed Ted, you medieval dickweed!”

A really dumb but fun and fast paced comedy film. An 80s comedy film that has actually aged rather well, most of the jokes and one liners still land all these years later. It helps that the film barely stops for a second, rushing through comedic set ups and always having fun interactions between the characters.

Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are great as the titular characters. Bags of chemistry between, their friendship seeming genuine and really fun to watch play out. Both so damn likeable and charming that it’s hard not to get taken in by their dumbness. They play off of each other really well, always having funny lines of dialogue, and reactions to the different parts of history they travel too. They manage to be genuinely funny in their simplistic nature, not the most well defined characters you’ll ever see but certainly two of the most loveable protagonists.

The plot is simple, but that’s all it needs to be to work. Travelling through time so the two leads can pass their history report the next day. Having these two loveable characters set off on a fast paced time travel adventure, meeting different historical figures and just having genuinely fun shenanigans. There’s a lot of funny moments with these historical figures being moved around into different times and how they play out within each. No real big stakes, no big fall out or argument like a lot of buddy comedies have in their middle act. It’s all just wholesome fun.

The places and times they go to all look great and have clearly had thought and care into their design. There’s a fun, very 80s soundtrack to the entire film. It’s honestly just a nice and fun comedy, well paced and enjoyable. Not perfect but it’s a fun 90 minutes.
