An Angel at My Table ★★★★

30 minutes in, I was not looking forward to the rest of this, as episodic coming of age tales hold little interest to me, even when they're done by directors of obvious talent. (THE LONG DAY CLOSES is the exception that proves the rule.) But Kerry Fox's performance as Janet Frame got under my skin and plugged directly into my anxiety circuits something fierce. Very much a strong female vision, as shown in its unsparing portrayal of feckless men and untraditional depiction of female form when half-clothed, and very cannily structured as its ever-expanding mosaic builds back upon its history.
