Le Doulos ★★★★½

Possibly a second viewing, as I have a weird feeling I've watched it but had not a single frisson of remembrance all the way through. At any rate, a very pleasurable mix of insouciant Belmondo, dour Reggiani, and double crosses so dense that you can't keep track, building to a white-knuckle closing fifteen minutes. A sneaky one-shot at a police station would be heralded as one of the all-time greats if it weren't so damn subtle; a commentary on Melville as a whole, probably.
