Mandy ★★★★½

Cattet/Forzani take the essence of genre movies and crush them to concentrate, as if only remembering the best parts, then rebuild them with unexplored uses of abandoned technique. Panos Cosmatos also works from similar texts but to entirely different effect, more dreamed than remembered, using the uneven rhythms, photographic aberrations, and peculiar acting choices and dialogue of said films to evoke a hypnotic trance. Cosmatos said at a BTBR screening that he was inspired by his imagining of what forbidden movies in the horror section might be liked based on their cover art. This is as reasonable an explanation for MANDY as you'll find. I fucking loved it. Please don't make us wait eight more years, Panos.
