The Spider and the Fly ★★★★

From the outset, this looks set to be an amiable cat and mouse cop/thief film in 1910s Paris, which (Anglophonic casting notwithstanding) I'm down with as a pleasant divertissement. But where the film goes in the third act, while not without foreshadowing, is nonetheless surprising and unexpected (though slightly less if you pay much attention to the poster at left), bearing more emotional weight than you might expect from its original frame. An overlooked gem. Cheers to Jaime Christley for the recommendation.
