    For the large part this was a solid bit of family entertainment with effects well-suited to 3D (the format I saw it in). Jolie and Fanning continue to have an interesting dynamic but they are a bit let down here by a weak script and one dimensional support. The nefarious actions of Pfeiffer's character are mostly predictable and unfortunately this role falls far short of her villainous outing in Stardust.

    Following a number of highly acclaimed releases in recent years, A24 has emerged as a distributor worth keeping a watch on. Of its quite tantalising 2019 roster it was Lulu Wang’s The Farewell that piqued my interest in particular; for its resounding festival praise but also for its marked departure from the horror and coming of age genres which A24 are arguably now most associated with.
