some all time favorite performances, all time favorite sound mixing, a few all time great images, awesome editing… etc etc etc.. could become really important on rewatch, especially with better picture than streamed from showtime. Another top tier film recommended by my dad..

Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach 1968
Amazing how incredibly early these images are, as in deeply impacted in composition by early cinema
One of cinemas greatest opening shots and probably the greatest closing shot. Ascension through simplicity and effacement. -

Benediction 2021
reminds me of the first performances of “rite of spring” … let the “intellectual ear” be perked…

Little Women 2019
Such modest and wonderful textures for a contemporary adaptation/period movie. Plus I love the elliptical gaps and playful and smart meta-auto-fiction of the narrative structure . Feels like it has something to add as a distant legacy addition. Almost wish it were even more minimal in its filmic approach. Has some of the best exterior New England period photography as well.

Top Gun: Maverick 2022
Sadly, this is no melodrama. 4 painfully flat endings, no sincere romance, the action is loud and sloppy. Val Kilmer gives the only human performance. Everyone else is following the shadow of deepfake Tom cruise..

Waves 2019
Despite impressive style, that borrows from malick in more subtle ways than aj edwards, the first half is difficult to watch. I nearly had to tune out after the seemingly irredeemable traumatic event, but the film eventually does have redemption as it’s goal. Moving performances in the second half. Looks and sounds like 2016. I like the changing aspect ratio although it kept landing on 2.40 (wrong)
