Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War ★★★★

There isn’t an easy way to review this film because there isn’t another film or novel or TV outing quite like it. The only things you can compare it to are the, often justifiably pilloried, yearly giant-sized annuals and cross-over events from the comics that inspired it. This third Avengers outing covers untried cinematic ground, so just in that respect this was an impressive accomplishment, but it’s more than just that. It does so much more and goes so much farther than basically anyone predicted. Infinity War is a dexterous balancing act of scripting-directing that is jaw drop audacious, hilarious and occasionally genuinely moving by turns. Not a visual playground in the way that Ragnarok and Guardians 2 were; but it’s so not a failure of imagination in the way that “competing” franchises have been, that it’s fair to say Thanos just killed the DCU
