The East

The East ★★

Let's talk Star Trek: The Next Generation for a minute.

Remember those two part episodes where the first part would be absolutely brilliant and leave you in eager anticipation of what would happen next? And then the second part sucked big, hairy monkey balls? And how that would piss you off?

The East is exactly like that. It is a tease that promises a lot but delivers absolutely nothing. The first act sets up one of the best thrillers in recent years only to have it unravel before your eyes into a preachy, unconvincing, unengaging and completely directionless mess.

Britt Marling seems to be an ideas person. Like Sound of my Voice, her previous collaboration with director Zal Batmanglij (which in Dutch means, Will Batmanslide), the idea is sound but the actual execution of the plot, the characterization and the resolving of conflict is haphazard.

This could have been a great film, but it unfortunately can't keep the promises it makes.
