Watched as part of Criterion’s Neo-Noir collection. Linda Fiorentino kills in this role, literally and figuratively.

This was very 90s—from the fashion to the sexual politics. There’s a recurring circus/carnival motif that doesn’t really make sense, and the ending feels unnecessary—I kinda wish it went darker instead of going for the final reversal. In retrospect it seems like Mädchen Amick should have been a bigger star than she ended up being?

Had never seen this before; so glad it got a restoration and rerelease in theaters and on disc. I thought a lot about how Maggie Cheung stopped acting while watching this.

I suppose Linklater is the obvious comparison here, but I’m reminded of nothing so much as Eighth Grade. There was a moment in the middle where I feared a hard pivot into an entirely different kind of movie, but thankfully it stayed on track. Not everything works in this film (let’s talk about that ending sometime) but the two leads are very good, and most of the big moments feel earned because of them.
