High and Low is two movies in one - the first - a character study when faced with a terrible choice is cluster-phobic if not a bit slow. It was an interesting start but honestly started losing me me by the middle part. The second half however is a tense, fast moving police procedural. It's inventive, interesting and fun to watch. The drug alley scenes in particular feel shocking compared to the films I've seen from that era. On the whole, the first lost me then gained me back - I still think Kurasawa's films are more interesting on paper than practice but ended up liking this quite a bit.
