    Fantastic Mr. Fox

It's been a long time since I've seen a Wes Anderson film. I still haven't seen all of his work. My favourite of those I have seen is The Life Aquatic.

As to be expected there's a few of Anderson's regular stable of actors, voice-only this time however. More of the same warm, muted colour palette, offbeat characters and quirky dialogue. The new aspect is the stop-motion animation which has a texture to it that's inviting and reminiscent of Nightmare…

  • The Sweeney

    The Sweeney

Based on the titular 1970s British crime drama TV series. I'd heard little about this one, just that it opened a festival last year.

Ray Winstone does rather well as Jack Regan, the cop with slightly dodgy morals and some brutal old-school methods of getting the job done. The other main characters are British faces I don't recognise apart from the man in charge of Internal Affairs Ivan Lewis, played by Steve Mackintosh who was the traitorous cop in the…

    God Bless America

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, this film is a searing indictment of the current state of America and its people's attitude and behaviour toward one another.

It starts with a narration from Frank (Jeff Murray), our protagonist whose had enough with the inconsiderate and the rude. He suffers from migraines, his neighbours and through his late-night TV viewing we experience a constantly depressing reflection of the world as it is.

This however, is not a film for everyone, if…

  • Beyond the Black Rainbow

    Beyond the Black Rainbow

A ponderous arthouse film with the production style of '80s cinema. Some other visual influences are obvious, such as THX-1138 and 2001: A Space Odyssey. However, of the no doubt countless others, I'd bet that R. W. Fassbinder's 'World on a Wire' is certainly one of them.

Don't watch this expecting to see a solid, logical narrative. In fact, I think the film might have benefitted from either scaling the story back or fleshing it out more. Instead, go for the hypnotic visual treat with its dreamlike atmosphere and spot-on synth score.
