Heaven Knows What ★★★★

While you can't deny the oppressive familiarity of subject, the Safdies' harrowing pinnacle of authenticity thrives thanks to its inventive pairing of narrative and aesthetic. An all-electronic score adds a bombastic gravity to what's otherwise a bunch of codependent addicts merely scrambling to achieve their next high, however the film's proclivity for devastating extremes is enough to fully engage and unsettle. Heaven Knows What is hands-down an exercise in excellently calculated realism that's certainly hard to shake as it epitomizes the contemporary portrait of affected youth in the throes of addiction and self-destruction.
