The Untouchables

The Untouchables ★★★½

Begins as standard procedural biopic fare involving Goody Two Shoes Ness the Treasury Goon, his now-trustworthy band of unlikely misfits, Capone himself and the predictably tangled web woven between the lot. That is, until the results of Ness and Co.'s actions reveal what (repeatedly) poking the Gangland bear truly does, yielding De Palma's TRUE thumbprint all throughout the final act. It's not so much a jarring change of hands from Mamet x De Palma-lite to De Palma himself as it's more of a stylistic lean in his direction that unfortunately comes to fruition a bit too late.
