Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit ★★★

I didn’t go into Jojo Rabbit with high hopes, but found myself pleasantly surprised, not least by the fact that the most egregious error of judgement in a comedy set in Nazi Germany circa 1945 came from the needle drop that closed proceedings. I’m sure some believe that even attempting to find humour in such circumstances is reprehensible, but for me it all depends on where the laughs are coming from and what the targets are. Whilst the satire of Chris Morris and Armando Iannucci was far more cutting in Four Lions and The Death of Stalin respectively, Taika Waititi primary aim is to make the Nazis the butt of his jokes, and he hits the mark more often than he misses. Thankfully it’s much closer to What We Do In The Shadows than Thor: Ragnarok in that respect.
