Aster’s sophomore effort, a unique and unsettling tale, sees four American collegiates skipping through golden Scandinavian fields right into a 9 day ritualistic ceremony in this Euro-trip from hell. It kicks off in stunningly macabre fashion, the opening sequence laden thick with the fog of death and despair, a foreboding herald of disturbances to soon come. Whilst Midsommar doesn’t sustain this level of dread throughout its hefty two and a half hour runtime, it is nonetheless an experience to remember, and a worthy, if not equal, follow-up to his debut, Hereditary. 2/2 from AA thus far.
