The Funhouse

The Funhouse ★★★½

Starting from the beautiful Halloween and Psycho references right in the opening sequence, this is a very lovable film. The victimized teens find themselves in a conundrum entirely of their own making, yet they are still sympathetic enough that I could not hate them for it, while the killers who end up stalking them actually do deserve our pity. Hooper structured this like a carnival visit, escalating from small and cheap thrills up to the centerpiece attraction, the one where you have to get in line for a while and hope it'll be worth it. Turns out: It is.
