Mean Girls 2004
I'd never actually seen this, so after coming across a trailer for the upcoming remake, we decided to watch the original. I knew I knew a little bit about it from years of cultural osmosis, but I hadn't realized just how many quotes and memes came from this. It was fun to watch, definitely funny, and I can definitely see how it has stuck around. But I also noticed a lot of things that, in 2023, didn't play quite so well, and will be interested to see how Tina Fey updates it twenty years later.

I donβt always entirely _get_ Wes Andersonβs films, but I invariably enjoy watching them. His directorial eye and style is great, the deadpan affectation in absurd circumstances often makes me laugh, Iβm never boredβ¦and by the end, well, it was weird, but I liked it.

On the one hand, it's my least favorite of Baz Lurhmann's projects. On the other hand -- I still liked it; even a "least favorite" Baz Luhrmann is still pretty good.
Pros: As always, the music and the visuals. Within the first five seconds, it's obvious that this is a Baz Lurhmann film, and it doesn't let up. I'll definitely be looking up the soundtrack; as can be expected from one of Baz's films, there are some really neat blendsβ¦

Barbie 2023
If you'd told me a year ago that I'd be excited enough about a Barbie movie to see it on opening day, or that I'd come out of it this impressed, I'd have likely laughed and waited to wake up so I could tell you about the weird dream I'd just had.
However, the marketing has been spot-on, the articles have been intriguing, and the reviews have been excellent (well, most of them β but if every review is positiveβ¦
